Dr. Sri is a well established author and theologian. He also helped found FOCUS in 1998. His book, The Art of Living: The Cardinal Virtues and the Freedom to Love came out in 2021. I recently read it and wanted to share my thoughts.
It was a heavy yet enjoying read. This was likely one of the most convicting books I’ve ever read. It is also incredibly well written. Sri explains seemingly complex terms in simple words. At times, I found myself frustrated at the author for the words he was writing because it made me realize how broken I am. But, isn’t that the point of the book? It should be encouraging that we need to turn to God. We need to focus on him. We must love others as he has loved us. It’s hard. It’s a challenge. We’re fallen human beings. We sin. I sin. Thank you God for your grace and mercy.
This book also provides practical ways to grow in virtue. Sri acknowledges ways we all fall short and gives examples where he has fallen short. He is not condemning us or showing how superior he is, but rather he offers his own faults, his own failings, and the truth of the Gospel to help us all grow in virtue. It’s a life long battle, but united to Christ we can win and enter into heavenly glory.
